• Billy Cundiff goes from goat to hero with a game-winning field goal for the Redskins

    Summary of 3 articles · Updated Oct 1, 2012
Before winning Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers, Redskins kicker Billy Cundiff tried to blow it, missing not one, not two, but three field goals. They failed to do it against RG3 and the Redskins, and Billy Cundiff nailed a 41-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter to lift the Redskins over the Buccaneers 24-22. A day after after Cundiff snatched victory from the jaws of defeat that had been snatched from the jaws of victory, coach Mike Shanahan gave Cundiff an endorsement, of sorts. In one of the more audacious scapegoat moves in recent memory, Shanahan forced Deltha O'Neal to move from cornerback to receiver after O'Neal was beat for a late game-winning touchdown against New England in 2003. Earlier in the game, he missed from 41 and 57 yards and had a particularly damaging 31-yard miss in the fourth quarter that left the door open for a great Buccaneers comeback.
