If today’s Battle in Seattle truly is a turning point for the season, then perhaps it’s fitting that it’s happening on Sanchez’s birthday and against Pete Carroll, Sanchez’s former coach at U.S.C. For the Jets to turn their season around, Sanchez needs to find another gear in his development. Sanchez turns 26 on Sunday, another reminder that he is no longer a puppy in N.F.L. terms. You wouldn’t expect Ryan to say something much different in the postgame scrum, certainly not after hearing him say it after most of the first eight games this season, but it’s harder to understand why Ryan feels that way.
