Throughout the free agent process, both Cashman and manager Joe Girardi raised the possibility that whomever replaced Rodriguez could be the third baseman the whole season. The truth is, the higher-ups don’t know what to expect from him, whenever he does come back, but at 37 and coming off his worst season, one in which he hit only five home runs after July 1 and missed the whole month of August with a broken hand, it is reasonable to assume it won’t in any way resemble the player he once was.
