The trade for Smith means the Chiefs will not use the No. 1 pick on a quarterback. Second, it means that the Chiefs didn’t like any of the available free-agent options in 2013.  The Chiefs could trade down from the No. 1 pick and acquire a second-round pick or take a quarterback in the third round. For the foreseeable future, the Chiefs are choosing to go with a veteran quarterback as their starter. Smith will be 29 in May. They didn’t have a have a second round pick in last year’s draft because of the Kevin Kolb trade, so they weren’t going to do without one for a second consecutive season. They still have interest in bringing Kevin Kolb back at a reduced price, although I have no information that contract talks have commenced, or how willing Kolb would be to take less money.
