According to reports, Schierholtz signed for $5 million, while Valbuena agreed to a $1.71 million contract and Russell signed a $1.775 million deal with the Cubs, who have not confirmed the signings. Valbuena, who made $930,000 last year, appeared in the most games at third base for the Cubs in 2013, batting .218 with 12 home runs and 15 doubles. Schierholtz also was coming off a strong season in which he set personal bests in home runs , doubles , at-bats and RBIs . The Cubs have talked to Samardzija about a long-term deal. Despite the inability to come to a long term deal or even a one year contract at this point right-hander Jeff Samardzija is still confident he can remain with the Chicago Cubs. "When you don't have control and other teams have your rights, all you can do is go out and hopefully put it on their side that this guy is invaluable and we need him and he's hard to replace," Samardzija said. "That's all you can do."
