• Darren Sharper Acquaintance Charged With Rape, Held Without Bond

    The former All-Pro safety Darren Sharper surrendered to the Los Angeles police after being named in a warrant involving a rape case in New Orleans. Sharper, 38, is also under investigation in sexual assault cases in Florida, Nevada and Arizona and has pleaded not guilty to rape charges in Los Angeles. Lawyers for Sharper have said they will prove that any sexual contact Sharper engaged in was consensual. In a bail motion filed in the California case, law enforcement officials said Sharper met women at clubs or parties, lured them to a hotel room, and drugged and raped them. ■ The Jets placed the franchise tag on Nick Folk, their reliable kicker, after he had perhaps the best season of his seven-year N.F.L. career. Last season, his fourth with the Jets, Folk made 33 of 36 field-goal attempts, including three winning kicks. He broke the franchise records for most consecutive field goals to start a season and most consecutive home field goals .
