Donald Butler will play out his contract year without an extension. Donald Butler is a Chargers captain for the first time, joining 2012 captains Philip Rivers, Nick Hardwick, Eric Weddle and Darrell Stuckey in the lineup released by the team Monday. All five captains were drafted by the Chargers, starting with Rivers and Hardwick in 2004. Butler, a 2010 third-round pick, is in the final season of his four-year rookie deal. Butler has said he learned a lot about leadership and football from fellow inside linebacker Takeo Spikes, a Chargers captain in 2011-12. Eugene Parker, his agent, and the Chargers opened contract discussions during training camp. In addition to being the subject of contract extension talks, the fourth-year pro is the leading inside linebacker in John Pagano's 3-4 defense and a mentor to Manti Te'o and Bront Bird, who will start next to him Monday night against the Texans.
