• Former AL president Lee MacPhail dies at 95

    Lee MacPhail was the son of Larry MacPhail, a top executive with the Cincinnati Reds, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees Whatever MacPhail did was done with disarming class and dignity, so much so that Steinbrenner once said, quite uncharacteristically, "You don't want to be against MacPhail on an important issue too many times because you start to look bad if you are." In 1974, MacPhail left the front office for good after he was voted American League President. Lee MacPhail, the longtime baseball executive who ruled in the celebrated Pine Tar case and later became part of the only father-son Hall of Fame pairing, has died. He was 95. As American League president from 1974-’84, however, MacPhail was viewed as Public Enemy No. 1 by Yankee fans and, especially, by owner George Steinbrenner after his controversial decisions in the infamous Pine Tar Game in 1983 , and the February 1984 “Tim Belcher affair” . MacPhail, whose father, Larry, was the innovative but volatile chief executive of the Cincinnati Reds, Brooklyn Dodgers and Yankees in the 1930s and ’40s, grew up in baseball in the Yankee system as their farm director from 1948-’58, during which time they produced the nucleus of seven world championship teams, including Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Hank Bauer, Billy Martin, Gil McDougald, Elston Howard, Bill Skowron, Bobby Richardson and Tony Kubek, among others.
