Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports that the Chiefs have had discussions about a new contract for Charles, who is set to make $3.9 million this year and $6 million next year under the terms of his current deal. Multiple reports have characterized Charles as moving to No. 2 on the running back compensation list, behind only Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. Smith likely is the next contract mission the front office will have to tackle, but the team also will have pass rusher Justin Houston to be concerned about heading into the final year of his deal and could have to make some tough decisions on a few high-priced veterans at some point.
