Francisco Liriano struck out 13 batters, and Pedro Alvarez hit his league-leading 31st home run as the Pirates defeated the San Diego Padres, 3-1, on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Petco Park. Liriano also lowered his ERA to 2.53. Chris Denorfia of the Padres said Liriano's fastball was "explosive," but so was his best breaking pitch: The Bucs' bullpen fanned four more Padres. He kept on rolling Monday night, striking out 13 in a 3-1 victory at San Diego. Alvarez got the Pirates on the board in the second when his single to right field skipped past the glove of Chris Denorfia and rolled all the way to the wall as Andrew McCutchen and Alvarez raced around the bases on the error for a 2-0 lead.
