Veteran pitcher Derek Lowe was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Monday. Lowe was the Rangers' long reliever. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Lowe to the minor leagues. Lowe, who has won 176 games and was a member of Boston's World Series championship teams in 2004 and 2007, has struggled this season pitching in relief for the Rangers. It was a hard decision for the Rangers, especially manager Ron Washington. At that point, the Rangers could move either Lindblom or one of their other starters into the long-relief role. He was called up on Thursday when pitcher Alexi Ogando went on the disabled list with triceps tendinitis and had two scoreless appearances during the Tigers series.
