Nnamdi Asomugha can play “major role” for 49ers defense

Nnamdi Asomugha, who began training camp competing for a roster spot, has won the No. 3 cornerback job with the San Francisco 49ers. In early August, 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said the jury was still out in terms of whether cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha would have a role on defense with the team in 2013. “We didn’t really know what we were getting when we got Nnamdi,” Fangio said. That means Asomugha will be inserted on the outside opposite Brown. Asomugha has passed Tramaine Brock on the depth chart as the third cornerback behind starters Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown. Chris Cullver, who served as the 49ers’ third cornerback in 2012, played 63 percent of the teams defensive snaps last season in that same role. Hopefully, he'll still be able to have some gas left in his tank to go out there and play like he did prior to going to Philadelphia.
