    The San Diego Padres still stand alone as the only active major league franchise without a no-hitter, thanks to Daniel Murphy of the New York Mets breaking up Despaigne's bid with four outs to go Sunday afternoon. He could have just as easily been talking about Despaigne's start either to his big league career or this particular start against the Mets . Despaigne, a 27-year-old Cuban defector who signed with the Padres in early May, was making his fifth career major league start. The Padres have entered the eighth inning with a no-hitter intact 20 times. With an exaggerated leg kick and a rotation of his hips back toward center field before the pitch, Despaigne calls to mind Hernandez, a fellow Cuban who was known as El Duque and built a reputation as a big-game pitcher while winning three World Series titles with the Yankees and another with the White Sox. The Padres won it when Seth Smith's high chopper near the mound was fumbled away by Mets reliever Josh Edgin, who stumbled and fell down on the play, allowing pinch-runner Cameron Maybin to score the game-winner in the ninth inning. You certainly wouldn't want to have been one of the scouts who told their bosses that this is a guy with average tools whose ceiling was as a long reliever or fifth starter that was the consensus coming out of his tryouts in Arizona last February.
