Andy Pettitte has broken Whitey Ford's record for career strikeouts by a New York Yankees pitcher. Pettitte entered the game needing two strikeouts to break the record. Pettitte tied and passed Hall of Famer and fellow left-hander Whitey Ford during his start on Monday against the Twins, and now stands alone atop the franchise's all-time strikeouts list. The Elias Sports Bureau is the official statistician of Major League Baseball and recognizes Ford as having 1,957 strikeouts, while other sources including MLB.com credit Ford with 1,956 strikeouts. The three-time All-Star broke into the big leagues with the Yankees in 1995 and has spent all but three of his 18 seasons in pinstripes. He allowed four runs on six hits and four walks, laboring through a three-run, 42-pitch first inning.
