    Samardzija and Hammel had been the targets of much trade speculation with the Cubs struggling through the season. That possibility remains, but it's said both Samardzija and Hammel have been informed they're headed to Oakland. Out of contention again this summer, the Cubs wanted to get the most for Samardzija while they could. Samardzija and Hammel join Scott Kazmir, Sonny Gray and Tommy Milone in one of the majors' best rotations. Samardzija has been one of the National League's top starters this season, compiling a 2.83 ERA in 17 starts. Samardzija's 107th pitch was a 96-mph heater to Juan Francisco, just off the plate. Industry sources previously told ESPNChicago.com's Jesse Rogers that many teams were interested in both pitchers, who threw back to back in the Cubs' rotation.
