Uehara joins a Red Sox bullpen that is already one of the strengths of the team. Uehara was traded to Texas in 2011, and he's pitched in the playoffs for the Rangers in each of the past two seasons. Uehara was used primarily as a setup man for the Rangers, with 36 of his 38 appearances coming in the seventh inning or later in 2012. Uehara was a two-time winner of the Sawamura Award, given annually to the best starting pitcher in Japan, during his tenure with the Yomiuri Giants of Central League, and he signed with the Orioles prior to the 2009 campaign. Before departing Nashville's winter meetings Thursday morning, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington told reporters the team had made progress on an acquisition that had not been previously reported. "It's still an area that we need to continue to address, and that's why we tried to do it a little on the cheaper side while we look at some of these other things.'' All rights reserved.
