• Thome closing in on return to Orioles

    Summary of 5 articles · Updated Sep 21, 2012
The O's have a need for Thome's bat. And the funny thing about 2012 is that Thome's real chance at a ring comes in a place he never expected to be, on a Baltimore Orioles team nobody expected to contend. The Baltimore Orioles have activated designated hitter Jim Thome and left-hander Troy Patton from the 15-day disabled list. Thome was batting .261 in 18 games for Baltimore before going on the DL on July 31 with a herniated disk in his neck. The Orioles had obtained him from the Philadelphia Phillies on June 30. While there's nothing new on Markakis, who is still waiting for the pins left to removed from his left thumb, the team did get some good news on Betemit Monday in that he will not need left wrist surgery.
