• Truck stop competitor of Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam says Pilot Flying J rebates harm small businesses

The rebates that Jimmy Haslam says are at the heart of a federal criminal investigation into his company have made it impossible for smaller, independent truck stops to compete against Haslam's massive Pilot Flying J, a trucking industry official says. What makes Haslam's company, Pilot Flying J, different is that the company's rebates are so ridiculously better than other competitors that few can put up a fight, Newman said. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, documents filed in court on Thursday allege that Pilot Flying J engaged in fraud aimed at keeping money owed as rebates for “many years.” And it gets worse.  The documents say Haslam knew about the fraud committed by top sales officials at his family business, Pilot Flying J, in which employees targeted unsophisticated trucking companies through a rebate program. In a meeting three to four years ago, the affidavit says, Haslam thanked an employee who was part of the scheme for saving the company money. He said in a statement Thursday that "the foundation of this company is built on its integrity and that any willful wrongdoing by any employee of this company at any time is intolerable."
